India Deaths Undercounted –Most Important Climate News 6/3/24
Wildfire season is at an early stage, but fire growth has begun to menace parts of the area near San Francisco, bringing questions about rising insurance rates in parts of the country that face this climate threat. What is known as the Corral fire started near Tracy, which is near I-580 west of San Jose. It has burned nearly 15,000 acres and is about 50% contained. Tracy has over 90,000 residents and is another example of how wildfires can burn near urban areas. Climatecrisis247 believes that, like hurricane-prone areas, residential insurance in areas where wildfires can be a threat will rise rapidly. High Country News recently reported, “Affordable home insurance is getting increasingly hard to find in wildfire-prone areas in the West. Climate change, along with flammable fuel buildup, is causing bigger, more frequent and more destructive wildfires, putting more and more homes at risk.” Often, rising insurance rates drive down home prices.

Wrong Climate Numbers –War Emissions
India’s Disaster Management Centre (DMC) released data on heat deaths and illnesses from March through May. There were 56 heat deaths, and about 25,000 suffered from heat stroke. Climatecrisis247 believes these numbers undercount the actual number of deaths and illnesses. In a nation with 1.3 billion people and 20 million in some of its larger cities, it is impossible to post accurate figures. In some places, temperatures have reached 120 degrees F. These areas have little air conditioning and none for the millions of poor residents.
BYD’s Extraordinary Engine
China’s EV giant BYD has launched a hybrid-engine car that can travel over 1,200 miles without refueling. Hybrids cannot only travel nearly as far with refueling, and the range of many EVs is less than 300 miles without recharging. One model will be priced under $13,000. This car poses a real challenge to all EV and hybrid companies worldwide. Climatecrisis247 believes the range of alternative fuel cars has been a primary drawback for many consumers. In the US, it is one reason the government has added 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs. Not only are they priced below EVs American companies can make, but they are also likely to be years ahead on innovations.
The Cost Of Climate Change
Climate change and weather activity have become significant issues for commodity prices. Due to a likely rise in heat and drought, prices of wheat and soy are rising because of the threat to crops. Fuels used for air conditioning will also rise. According to Bloomberg, “The outlook is a bleak reminder of how wild weather driven by climate change is worsening inflation, elevating the cost of energy, food and fuel.” Climatecrisis247 believes this is part of a much broader reorientating of financial risk due to climate change. It will affect industries from farming to insurance. And the changes are permanent and will likely get worse.
