A large portion of the country is also experiencing historically low precipitation totals. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, 79.3% of the country was experiencing some level of drought as of late October, the second worst October drought conditions in the past 25 years. A look at recent rainfall data reveals a list of major cities throughout the South and Northeast currently experiencing record dry spells, with more than 25 consecutive days without rain.

To determine the cities experiencing record dry spells this Halloween, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on precipitation streaks from the NOAA. Cities with at least 25,000 residents were ranked based on the number of days without recorded precipitation as of October 27, 2024. Only cities where the current dry spell is the longest recorded streak of days without rain were included. Data is at the station level and was matched to the nearest city of at least 25,000 residents within 20 miles. Data on normal October precipitation totals is based on NOAA data for 1901 to 2000 and is at the county level.
