This week, a major snowstorm is forecast to dump several inches of snow in dozens of counties throughout the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic. More than 400 counties are projected to receive at least six inches of snow over the next 72 hours, representing 10% of the U.S. population. More than 500 counties are under winter storm warnings from the National Weather Service.

The snowfall is expected to be heaviest around the Kansas-Missouri border, with cities like Springfield, Missouri forecast to receive over a foot of snow. Midwestern snowfall will also be accompanied by a steep drop in temperatures. In Topeka, Wichita, and Kansas City, temperatures are expected to drop below 0°F overnight. A closer look at the data reveals which cities are directly in the path of what could be the biggest snowstorm of the season.

To determine the cities in the path of this week’s winter storm, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on snowfall accumulation forecasts from the NOAA. Cities with at least 100,000 residents were ranked based on total forecast snowfall accumulation for February 18 to 20, 2025. Supplemental data on forecast temperature minimums are also from the NOAA. Population data is from the U.S. Census Bureau.
