From Florida to Pennsylvania, A Final Surge of Freezing Air Is Coming This Week. Here’s Where It Will Hit

So far this year, spring has been marked by a series of unseasonable blasts of cool air. A southerly displacement of the polar vortex and a late-season northerly tilt of the polar jet stream have brought Arctic air to latitudes as low as Florida and rare April snow to the mid-Atlantic.

This week, another surge of chilly air is forecast to impact the United States. The cold front will affect the Great Lakes and Northeast, while the greatest temperature anomalies will be observed in the Southeast. In more than a dozen major cities, temperatures are forecast to dip more than 10 degrees below historical normals for April 16 and 17. A closer look at the data reveals where exactly the coming cold front will hit the hardest.

To determine the cities where freezing air will hit hardest this week, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed 72-hour temperature forecasts and historical station-level daily temperature readings from the NOAA. Cities were ranked based on the difference between the forecast minimum temperature for April 16-17, 2025, and the average observed minimum temperature for April 16-17 from 2006 to 2020. Cities with the largest forecast temperature anomalies were ranked highest. Gridded forecast data are from the National Digital Forecast Database, while historical temperature normals are from the Global Historical Climatology Network daily program of the National Centers for Environmental Information. Weather stations were matched to places using nearest neighbor analysis and were limited to cities within 50 miles of the city centroid. Only cities with at least 50,000 residents were considered.
