Sales of These Once Popular EV Models Have Collapsed
Over the last decade, electric vehicles have been gaining popularity in the United States. Domestic EV sales have increased nearly every year since 2019, with volume topping 1 million units for the first time in 2023 – and again each following year. But early indications suggest that EV sales may fall well short of that threshold in 2026.
According to a recent report from Cox Automotive, only 216,399 EVs were sold in the U.S. during the first three months of the year. If nothing changes, annual unit sales will not even clear 870,000, fewer than in any year since 2022. The marked decline in consumer demand is due largely to the Trump administration’s repeal of an incentive program that allowed qualified EV buyers to claim a $7,500 federal tax credit. When the program ended in September 2025, quarterly EV sales fell by 46%.
The latest data shows that any potential recovery for the domestic EV market remains well in the future. In the first three months of 2026, EV unit sales were down 7.8% quarter-over-quarter, and down 27% year-over-year. Waning consumer demand was especially pronounced for certain makes and models, including several that were relatively popular as recently as a year ago.
Using data from Cox Automotive, Climate Crisis 247 identified the EV models that have reported the largest year-over-year sales collapse. EVs are ranked on the relative change in sales volume between Q1 2025 and Q1 2026. We only considered models with at least 1,000 unit sales in the first three months of last year. Supplemental data on MSRP and estimated range for the EVs on this list are as reported by Car and Driver.
Among the 10 EV models on this list, year-over-year sales declines range from 60.4% to nearly 83%.These vehicles include the Ford Mustang Mach-E, which ranked among the top five best-selling EV’s in the U.S. in each of the last two years. So far in 2026, Ford has sold 7,007 fewer Mach-Es than it did by this time last year.
