Bird Crashes Are Hurting Wind Energy
Donald Trump is undermining wind energy through new regulations that have shuttered several wind facilities and could cripple the offshore business for decades. Birds are also a problem
“Anytime you put a hazard in the airspace that birds use, there’s a chance that birds will fly into it. We see that all the time,” said Bryan Watts, director of the Center for Conservation Biology remarked to Inside Climate News. The problem is not a new one.
Birds Die
Bird collisions are described as a minor problem for wind farms, but scientists believe there is a need to work on this issue and set up systems that are less dangerous. Any change made to wind farm infrastructure is going to be costly in a business in which costs are already overwhelming.
The wind farm and bird research opens the issue of whether troubled industries can afford to consider minor effects on the environment. A small number of birds are killed. A farm can also provide electricity to tens of thousands of homes.
The cost to save birds is high, in an industry that cannot afford it.
