Green America To Be Hit By Tariffs
The greening of America is based to a large extent on the success of solar, wind, nuclear, and hydro. The most successful of these is solar. The most potentially abundant of these is solar because solar panels can be installed almost anywhere. They are not local, unlike hydro, nuclear, and wind.

Tariffs could hit solar energy hard, particularly if the tariffs target China. Ember pointed out, “China has at least 80% of the global market share in solar manufacturing capacity, making Chinese exports an important dataset for tracking the clean energy transition.”
Planning to block many products from China will affect the entire solar manufacturing industry. “China dominates global solar supply, and most U.S. developers source low-cost solar panels from Southeast Asia, where many Chinese companies have shifted operations to bypass U.S. tariffs,” Reuters says.
This import problem puts pressure on other electricity supplies, just as the US needs more capacity to a large extent because of AI server farms. Next year, AI demand worldwide is expected to match Japan’s electricity demand.
Hydro And Electric Power
Hydroelectric power is at close to capacity in the US. It will take time to get a large nuclear capacity online. Wind energy success has been intermittent, with infrastructure and financing problems.
These green limits mean utilities will not be able to cut the use of fossil fuels sharply, and in particular coal.
Although it is not their primary intention, tariffs may make America less green.
