In 2016, temperatures in San Antonio hit 82.9°F on Christmas Day, more than 30°F above normal. Temperatures in Houston hit 84.9°F on Christmas in 2015, over 31°F above normal. And while a majority of Christmas temperature records have been set in the last decade, some of the most sweltering Yuletides occurred in the 1950s and 1980s. A look at historical NOAA data reveals the hottest Christmases ever.

To determine the hottest Christmases ever, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed historical data from the NOAA’s Global Historical Climatology Network. The maximum temperature recorded on Christmas Day in every major city was ranked based on the difference from normal maximum temperatures on Christmas Day in that city for 1901 to 2000. Only weather stations with at least 100 years of data in cities with at least 250,000 residents were considered. Population data is from the U.S. Census Bureau.
