Just like last year, and the year before that, this Christmas could bring record highs to large swaths of the country.

Temperatures are forecast to exceed historic normals by more than 10°F in at least 200 major cities, and in some cities could set records for the hottest Christmas ever. A look at NOAA temperature forecast data reveals the cities that could have their warmest Christmases ever this year.

To determine the cities that could have their warmest Christmases ever, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on historical temperatures and temperature forecasts from the NOAA. Cities with at least 25,000 residents where the forecast maximum for December 25, 2024 exceeds the historical maximum for Christmas Day were ranked based on the difference between the forecast and prior record. Data was aggregated from Global Historical Climatology Network weather stations to places using boundary definitions from the U.S. Census Bureau. Only stations with at least 100 years of data were considered.
