This week, warm temperatures are combining with Santa Ana winds to create a late season heat wave in Southern California. The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories in several counties, with temperatures forecast to set daily records in some cities.

Peak temperatures vary across the country. While about one-fourth of the country – 87.8 million Americans – experiences its hottest temperatures in the seven days between July 12 and July 18, there are hundreds of cities in the West Coast and South where the hottest day historically occurs in August or later. A closer look at the data reveals when the hottest day of the year falls in major cities across the country.

To determine where the hottest day of the year falls across the country, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed historical weather station-level observations on maximum temperature for the years 1851 to 2024. Daily normal temperature maximums were averaged across all available data years and ranked based on daily average high. Weather stations were matched to cities using nearest neighbor analysis. Cities are ordered by population.
