Gale Warning: Dual Wind Threat to Deliver Damaging Winds on Both Coasts

This week, two separate weather systems are forecast to deliver strong wind gusts to several parts of the country. The National Weather Service has issued gale warnings and high wind warnings in both the Pacific Northwest and New England, as well as in the Great Lakes region.

More than two dozen counties are forecast to experience wind gusts above 40 miles per hour. According to the NWS, wind gusts stronger than 39 miles per hour can break small branches and impede walking, while wind gusts above 47 miles per hour can cause structural damage. In some counties, strong winds will be accompanied by heavy precipitation and increased flood risk. A closer look at the data reveals the counties forecast to get the most damaging wind this week.

To determine the counties that will get the worst wind gusts this week, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on wind gust forecasts from the NOAA’s National Digital Forecast Database program. Counties were ranked based on maximum forecast wind gusts for the period November 4 to 6, 2025. Raster data were averaged across county boundaries using spatial zonal statistics. Supplemental data on population is from the U.S. Census Bureau.
