In a recent analysis, researchers found that rainstorms are getting more intense amid human-driven climate change. Climate change leads to warmer air, which can hold more moisture and lead to heavier rainfall extremes. For every 1°F of warming, the air can hold 4% more moisture, increasing the chance of excessive downpours and raising the risk of severe flooding.

This week, forecasters across the country are preparing for a massive rainfall event. Over the next 72 hours, more than 200 cities will receive at least five inches of rain, with more than 500 cities forecast to receive at least four inches. A widespread flood watch is active from Dallas to Cleveland, covering 518 counties and 31 million Americans. A closer look at the data reveals the cities that will get the most rainfall this week.

To determine which U.S. cities will get battered by severe rainstorms this week, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on quantitative precipitation forecasts from the NOAA. Cities were ranked based on total forecast rainfall for April 1, 2025 to April 4, 2025. Only cities with at least 50,000 residents were considered.
