Most Efficient EVs On The Market Today

While widespread adoption may still be years away, electric vehicles, or EVs, have been growing steadily in popularity in the United States. According to the International Energy Agency, domestic EV unit sales climbed from about 200,000 in 2020 to 1.2 million in 2024. More recently, a report from Kelley Blue Book found that Americans bought nearly 300,000 new EVs in the first quarter of 2025, an 11.4% increase from Q1 2024.
According to a study from the Pew Research Center, most Americans who are considering switching to an EV – 72% – are doing so to reduce their carbon footprint and ultimately help the environment. But nearly as many prospective buyers – 70% – cite saving money on gas as an additional or standalone reason to make the transition. Indeed, buying an EV can save a typical driver thousands of dollars in just a few years, as EVs are far more efficient than their internal combustion engine counterparts – particularly certain EV models.
Using data from the Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy, Climate Crisis 247 identified the most efficient EV models on the market today. We reviewed data on hundreds of EV makes and configurations for the 2025 model year and listed those with the highest estimated fuel economy ratings. For each EV make and model, we only considered the trim level with the best estimated MPGe, or Miles Per Gallon Equivalent, an efficiency rating comparable to traditional gasoline powered vehicles. As a result, each make and model on this list is also available in trim levels with lower estimated MPGe ratings than those noted in this story. All supplemental data is also from the EPA and DOE.
Among the 13 vehicles on this list, fuel efficiency ratings range from 115 MPGe to 146 MPGe in combined city and highway driving. For comparison, fuel economy ratings for even the most efficient hybrid vehicles on the market today do not exceed 60 MPG. As a result, estimated charging costs for the vehicles on this list are anywhere from $550 to $700 per year. According to EPA estimates, this can save drivers $6,000 or more on average over a five year period.
