The 25 Best Cities For Charging Electric Vehicles

One of the largest barriers to EV adoption is lack of charging infrastructure. While there are currently some 79,00 public EV charging stations distributed throughout the United States, a recent McKinsey analysis estimates that America would need over one million public EV chargers by 2030 to support federal EV adoption targets.
While the lack of a national alternative fuel network has created charging “dead zones” throughout the country, there are a handful of communities where robust EV infrastructure reduces range anxiety and helps support widespread EV adoption. A look at EV charging stations per capita at the local level reveals a tapestry of wealthy cities in regions with large tech sectors like the Colorado Front Range, Silicon Valley, and the D.C. metropolitan area.
To determine the cities with the most EV charging stations per capita, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on alternative fueling station locations from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Cities were ranked based on the number of public electric vehicle charging stations within their boundaries per 10,000 residents as of September 25, 2024. City boundaries are from the U.S. Census Bureau and are for 2023. Supplemental data on population and median household income are from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2022 American Community Survey and are five-year estimates. Only cities with at least 50,000 residents were considered.
