Places in Each State that Got the Most Snow on Christmas
Climate change has brought meaningful shifts to weather patterns around the world, and these shifts will likely only become more pronounced in the coming years. In the United States, changes have included more frequent and intense natural disasters, hotter summers, milder winters, and, according to a 2024 report from the non-profit advocacy group Climate Matters, a noticeable reduction in seasonal snowfall.
The report, which analyzed snowfall trends across 2,041 places in the United States, found that nearly two-thirds of the locations studied get less winter snow now than they did in the early 1970’s. Reduced snowfall can have many serious implications, as runoff from snowmelt is an essential source of water for reservoirs and underground reserves in the Western United States. From an economic perspective, natural snow is the lifeblood of countless businesses that depend on tourism for outdoor winter recreation, like skiing. And, while not nearly as consequential, less snowfall also means millions of Americans are less likely to have a white Christmas.
There are more than 17,600 weather stations that monitor snowfall in the continental United States, and of them, only 139 reported an inch or more of snowfall on Christmas Day 2025, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. These stations are located across 10 states, and while most reported 2 inches of snowfall or less, some reported double-digit accumulation.
Using data from NOAA’s Daily U.S. Snowfall and Snow Depth program, Climate Crisis 247 identified the places in each state that got the most snow on Christmas Day 2025. For each of the 10 states that recorded at least an inch of snowfall, we listed the local weather station that reported the greatest volume of snow on December 25, 2025. Supplemental data on typical precipitation volume in the month of December in the surrounding county are based on 20th century averages, as reported by NOAA.
In the 10 states on this list, which are concentrated in the West and the Northeast, maximum snowfall totals reported this past Christmas range from 1 inch to nearly 2.5 feet. It is important to note that many of the weather stations that reported statewide snowfall highs on Christmas are located at high elevation – such as the Mount Washington weather station in Coos County, New Hampshire – and do not necessarily reflect snowfall totals in population centers.
