Munich Re has issued its annual report on the financial effects of climate and other natural disasters. It put this price tag at $250 billion for 2023. Of this, the cost of storms in North America hit $66 billion, of which $50 billion was insured. The financial firm said climate change was responsible for many of the 74,000 natural disasters it tracked last year.

Climate crisis: Global population reaches 8 billion as world boils.

A scientist at NASA said the world will move above the 1.5 degrees C level that most experts hope will not be reached until 2030 or later. Many also hope the number will not be reached at all if proper steps are taken. According to The Guardian, “The internationally agreed threshold to prevent the Earth from spiraling into a new superheated era will be “passed for all practical purposes” during 2024, the man known as the godfather of climate science has warned.”

Data published by Copernicus said that global warming topped 1.4 degrees C last year, very close to the level at which the climate crisis tips close to chaos. This is another report that says it may be too late for the world to hit its temperature goals. CNN reports: “Scientists repeatedly expressed shock in 2023 as successive heat records fell, and warned the world is moving dangerously close to the 1.5-degree limit that nearly 200 countries sought to avoid in the Paris Agreement in 2015.”

The air turbulence, which often affects commercial airlines, has increased substantially. On Atlantic crossing flights, this is due to disruptions in the jet stream. Yale Climate Connections reports …”over the past 40 years, severe clear air turbulence over the North Atlantic increased by more than 50%.”
