Fall Temperatures Shattered All-Time Records in These States
This year, the fall season does not officially end until the winter solstice on December 21. But, as it does every year in the United States, the meteorological fall ended with the month of November – and data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows that this past fall will go down as one of the warmest in U.S. history.
The average temperature in the continental U.S. from the beginning of September to the end of November 2025 was 57.2°F – about 3.7°F warmer than the 20th century seasonal average, and the third highest average fall temperature since at least 1895. While fall temperatures in 2025 were higher than normal in most of the country, in several states, temperatures this fall either topped or matched all-time record highs.
Using data from NOAA, Climate Crisis 247 identified the states where average fall temperatures hit historic highs in 2025. We reviewed average 2025 temperatures for the meteorological fall – a period stretching from September through November – in each of the Lower 48 states, and identified those for which last season’s average temperature either set or matched all-time records, going back 131 years. Supplemental temperature data is also from NOAA, and new monthly record-highs by weather stations in each state are from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information program. Population figures are from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2024 American Community Survey. States are listed in ascending order, based on their average temperature in fall 2025.
Of the seven states that reported record breaking average highs in the fall of 2025, six are located in the West and one is in the South. Among these places, historically high average fall 2025 temperatures range from 48°F to nearly 71°F – exceeding baseline norms by anywhere from 3.5°F to 5.1°F.
In most of these states, multiple weather stations reported new monthly highs last fall. In Washington State, the mercury rose to all-time highs for the month of September 39 times across multiple weather stations, often hitting triple digits. In New Mexico, temperatures hit or matched historic November highs 11 times at weather stations across the state.
