Over 20% Of Congress Are Climate Deniers.
According to American Progress, 123 members of Congress are climate deniers. Of these, 35 are members of the Senate, and 100 are members of the House. This is 23% of the 525 members of the 118th US Congress. The list is based on those who “say climate change is not real” or that it is a “hoax.”
The figure is stunning based on several facts. The first is that 2023 was the hottest year on record; this trend has extended into the first half of this year. The pace at which oceans are warming is faster than expected. The number of tornadoes and hail storms has worsened. Additionally, hundreds of cities in the US have hit historic high temperatures. There could be 1,600 tornadoes in the US this year.
The primary reason climate deniers give is that the weather has had major swings. While this may be true, there is no proof that those periods are close to the current one regarding temperature changes or violent climate crises worldwide. Another key example is that home insurance has become a $1 trillion weather-related issue.
The significant problem with this 23% is that Congress remains a critical center of creating the rules and regulations of government and corporate activity that affects American policy. The US remains one of the world’s largest polluters, along with China and India,
