Plastics Will Pollute The World For Centuries

Delegates from 182 nations will meet in Geneva in an attempt to agree on a binding solution to prevent the spread of plastics production and plastic pollution. It is an economic issue and one of environmental cleanup. Plastics and microplastics are found almost everywhere in the world, which includes the human body.
The venue to settling on this agreement is known as the U.N. Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution. It has been attempting to reach an agreement for most of this decade. Nations which produce plastics and petroleum products which are used to make them have undermined the negotiations for the entire time.
Plastics Last 500 Years
According to the scientists who have provided information for the meetings, plastics production doubled between 2000 and 2020. It is expected, without an agreement, that production will triple in another three decades.
Plastic can take 500 years to decompose. That means billions of tons of plastic will not disappear for 25 generations or more. This assumes no plastics are produced from today going forward.
With no agreement at the U.N. Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution, plastics could be a part of the pollution problem indefinitely.
