Vermont Town Ruined By Flood

Plainfield, Vermont, doesn’t belong on a map anymore. As Inside Climate News points out, it has been nearly obliterated by several storms. It was a victim of Hurricane Beryl in July 2024. The extraordinary thing about this is that Beryl first made US landfall in Texas. That was 2,000 miles away.

The destruction of the town is a reminder of how storms that make landfall in one place can devastate another. Hurricane Helen destroyed parts of western North Carolina in June 2025. In all likelihood, some of the structures in the area will never be rebuilt. Some people who left won’t return.

Wildfires From Canada

Major storms are not the only environmental disasters that have effects hundreds of miles away. Canadian wildfires in the country’s northeast, near the Arctic Circle, blanketed New York City in 2023. This year, fires in central Canada have hit air quality in cities throughout America’s Midwest, and have done so off and on for weeks.

What has not changed with many Americans is the understanding that the problems of this kind are now permanent. While there may not be a major hurricane that affects the northeast every year, they will be more frequent and more violent. While every wildfire in America’s western states and Canada may not spread smoke to the Midwest and New York, it will happen more frequently.

The Vermont flooding is a very small part of a very large problem
