Soaring AC use set to create a vicious Cycle, Strain Global Energy Supplies
Air conditioning demand is projected to surge over the next decade, with the International Energy Agency predicting that it will consume as much electricity by 2034 as the entire Middle East currently does. And this creates a vicious cycle: As AC use grows, so does pollution from the fossil fuels mostly used to power it, thus creating pollution and therefore more global warming. The challenge lies in meeting this demand with renewable energy sources like wind and solar; however, they are unlikely to be sufficient.
