You’re bad, Big Oil! New York State Mulls massive Lawsuit Over Climate Damage
New York State prosecutors and politicians are considering a lawsuit against major oil companies, accusing them of hiding knowledge about climate damage for decades. The case aims to follow the precedent set by the $250 billion settlement from big tobacco lawsuits in the 1990s. Several states and municipalities are already pursuing similar legal actions, hoping to hold oil companies accountable for pollution, climate-related disasters and health impacts, including deaths from extreme heat. However, proving individual harm and establishing damages will be challenging and is expected to take years to resolve in court.
