Spain Floods To Do Millions In Damages
Floods driven by floods created by over a foot of rain in and around Valencia, Spain, have killed over 200 people. Hundreds of cars have been ruined, and hundreds of buildings have either been badly damaged or destroyed. The city is on Spain’s easternmost border across from Sardegna. It has over 800,000 residents, and the surrounding areas push that to over one million.
The AP says climate change has made these kinds of storms more likely and violent. “Human-caused climate change made Spain’s rainfall about 12% heavier and doubled the likelihood of a storm as intense as this week’s deluge of Valencia, according to a rapid but partial analysis Thursday by World Weather Attribution, a group of international scientists who study global warming’s role in extreme weather.”
Twelve percent does not seem like much, except for the cities affected.
Financial Calculations Of Storms
The multimillion-dollar damage does show the financial effect of these storms. Areas where insurance for homes and cars was reasonable began to skyrocket. Expepesxed fo contractors and material rise because of demand to repair battered buildings.
Weather events can now be tracked not just by lost lives and lost homes. Lost dollars can measure them.
