Ring of fire: More than 125 Woodland blazes Burn As Drought Slams New York City
The conflagrations in the Nutmeg State — numbering about 125 — are not far east from America’s largest metro region, a sign of how drought has started to move close to large and densely populated places.
The fires, including one New York City’s Prospect Park, are blamed on a 40-day drought in the region, the longest stretch in decades, with the Big Apple for the first time receiving no rain in October.
The blazes in Connecticut, as well as ones in New York state and New Jersey, have started to spread smoke to other areas, something that happened last summer when forest fires hundreds of miles north in Canada went up in flames.
The situation is likely a prompt governments in the region to rethink their fire preparedness in order to tackle the new phenomenon, meaning they must anticipate conditions like those in arid areas in the West, where large wildfires are frequent. There is a difference, however, because the places where these burns in the west are often far from cities, unlike in the Northeast.
