140 Miles Per Gallon Equivalent? EVs With the Best ‘Fuel’ Efficiency

In a recent AAA survey, researchers identified lower fuel costs as the primary reason consumers want an electric vehicle. While 60% of consumers said they would buy an EV out of concern for the environment, 76% said they just want to save money on fuel.

Manufacturers have made vast improvements in EV technology over the last few years, with fuel efficiency for the newest models nearly three times higher than that of the average conventional gasoline car. A look at EPA testing data reveals the EVs with the highest fuel efficiency.

To determine the EVs with the highest fuel efficiency, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on fuel economy characteristics from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for model years 1984 through 2025. Fully electric vehicles were ranked based on combined city and highway miles per gallon-equivalent. MPGe measures energy efficiency based on how far a vehicle can travel on the energy equivalent of one gallon of gasoline, using 33.7 kilowatt-hours of electricity as the equivalent of one gallon of gasoline. Supplemental data on combined city and highway range capacity and the time it takes to fully charge a battery using a 240-volt outlet are also from the EPA. All data are based on vehicle testing done at EPA’s National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory in Ann Arbor, Michigan as well as test results submitted to EPA by vehicle manufacturers.
