Typhoon Shatters Wind Energy

Recharge reports that one of the world’s largest wind turbines was destroyed by high winds. The manufacturer was unclear whether the faults in its system could have played a part in the malfunction. “The world’s most powerful wind turbine, a 20MW giant manufactured by Mingyang, has reportedly suffered multiple blade breaks just months after the prototype machine was installed in China,” the media source reports.

It also needs to be determined whether typhoon Yagi damaged the facility when it hit the area in September. There is worry that this could have been the primary cause. 

Wind turbines are notoriously fragile compared to the specifications given by their manufacturers. A turbine maintained off Nantucket by Vinyard Wind collapsed in July. Parts washed up on shore. A few months earlier, there was a similar collapse in the Dogger Bank Wind Farm in the North Sea.

Wind Company Trouble

Several large companies have dropped or curtailed their wind farm projects. Earlier in February, Reuters reported,  “The world’s three biggest wind power groups – Siemens Energy, Orsted and Vestas on Wednesday gave a sober view of the year ahead for an industry buffeted by project delays, equipment problems and inflation.”

With each collapse and malfunction, wind energy’s future as a major renewable is pushed into the future. This happens at a time when alternative energy is critical to cutting the use of fossil fuels.
