Fusion Energy Would Be Most Powerful In History

“Nuclear fusion—the merging of light atomic nuclei—has the potential to produce energy with near-zero carbon emissions, without creating the dangerous radioactive waste associated with today’s nuclear fission reactors, which split the very heavy nuclei of radioactive elements.”–Scientific American

For decades scientists have believed the creation of fusion energy was impossible. It still may be, but for the first time, scientists are close to a working model. If they can create a commercial version, it would dwarf the clear energy provided by nuclear and would, in probability, become the most powerful form of energy in history. And, it is green.

According to Axios, the Fusion Industry Association  is trying to get the federal government to provide various projects in the sector a total of $10 billion. “Fusion could be a grid game changer, but the industry thinks it gets paltry support relative to other energy technologies funded through DOE.

China is at work on a fusion project, although it is too early to tell how they have progressed. Reuters describes the facility as “huge.”

Finish Line May Be In 2025

The most promising project in the US is Helios, which is scheduled to provide fusion power to Microsoft by 2028 which seems impossible. The company just raised $425 million at a value of $5.245 billion. Fusion said it is held back by a lack of sophisticated chips, much as is the case with many tech companies. Tech Crunch reports about Helios latest project. CEO David Kirtley said. “Polaris is 50,000 of these large-scale, pulse-power semiconductors, and getting those set the timeline.”

Most experts in fusion think the Helios timeline cannot be met. They believe working fusion is decades away. Whether then or now, it would not only be the world’s strongest and most efficient for of enough. It will also be the greenest.
