DeepSeek Success May Help Environment

The new AI math is simple, if its basis is true. The new China DeepSeek AI product uses much less electricity than US products. That hurts powerful chip maker Nvidia, and the big tech companies that have put billions of dollars into the development of energy hungry service farms.
*America’s Electricity Use
Less electricity use would change the likely future of electricity supply in the US totally. Server farms were going to change the balance of power in the electricity business. There is not enough electricity to go around, the forecasts assumed. Either large tech companies would need to build their own energy generation and grids, or they would have to tap into America’s aging grid, and tax electricity production.
It would take years for big tech to create its own electricity systems. Most would be, it has been presumed, powered by green energy. However, green energy that could power these centers might not be brought online for years. Some, like small nuclear power installations, are still untested.
Aging Grid
The alternative for AI servers farms is use of the old US grid, which cannot be taxed much more than it is today. And, a sudden increase in demand would mean a larger use of fossil fuels, at least temporarily.
DeepSeek may be an enemy of OpenAI, Microsoft, xAI, Google, and Meta. It could also be the best friend electricity generation in the US has.
