GoFundMe has raised over $250 million for the victims of the LA wildfires. Unfortunately, the damage has been put as approximately $20 billion. However, for people with immediate needs, it is a lifeline.
According to The New York Times, “Donations on the crowdfunding site to people and fire relief efforts have exceeded those for all natural disasters worldwide last year.” That means a staggering number of people have given money. It is also likely that there have been some large gifts
15,000 Homes Destroyed
One of the issues is how the funds will be distributed. As many as 15,000 homes and other structures have been destroyed. Some people have lost everything. Many will not be able to move into homes for months, or even years. Some may now be able to move back at all.
One problem the money cannot help is that some owners have no insurance. Many who rebuild will not be able to get it in the future. This means they will risk the enforce value of their homes if there is another large fire in the area.
Poison Ash
Another challenge that money cannot solve. Some of the fire left huge amounts of ash. A portion of this is poisonous. There is a debate about where this can be relocated sagely.
The GoFundMe shows how generous people can be, but, based on the disaster’s size that is about all.
