Heavy rainfall is largely due to a rare late-spring nor’easter. Fueled by the collision of unseasonably cold air from Canada and warm, moisture-laden air from the Atlantic, the northeastern coastal storm is expected to deliver one to three inches of rain across a wide swath of the region, with localized totals higher in parts of New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. The National Weather Service has issued flood watches in areas with already saturated ground, while several major cities could see travel disruptions extend into Memorial Day weekend. A closer look at the data reveals the cities set to get the most precipitation this week.
To determine the cities most likely to get hammered by rain this week, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on quantitative precipitation forecasts from the National Weather Service of the NOAA. Cities were ranked based on total forecast cumulative rainfall for the period May 22 to May 24, 2025. Only cities with at least 50,000 were considered. Population data is from the U.S. Census Bureau.
