While Memorial Day typically marks the unofficial start to summer heat, many celebrants this year shivered through cold conditions more typical of March than late May.

The chill was driven by an unusually strong upper-level trough that dipped far into the eastern U.S., dragging Arctic air southward and plunging temperatures far below normal across large parts of the Midwest, Northeast, and Appalachians on Monday. Pools and water parks closed, and more than a dozen U.S. weather stations recorded their coldest Memorial Day on record. A closer look at the data reveals the cities that set records for temperature lows this past Memorial Day.

To determine the cities that experienced record-setting cold on Memorial Day, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed daily temperature data from NOAA’s Global Historical Climatology Network. Records were compared against long-term station averages and historic Memorial Day values, using data from stations with at least 15 years of observations. Stations were matched to cities using nearest neighbor analysis. Only cities with at least 20,000 residents were considered.
