In much of the United States, average temperatures last month were well above historical norms. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, temperatures in the continental U.S. averaged 71.2°F throughout the month of June 2025, about 2.8°F above the typical, mean June temperature, based on averages for the month recorded between 1901 and 2000 – and only about 0.6°F below the all-time, recorded in June 2021.

Last month, unusually high temperatures were evident throughout much of the country, as heat waves moved through several major metropolitan areas in the Midwest and Northeast, including Minneapolis, Chicago, Detroit, and New York City. In parts of the eastern seaboard, from Maryland up through Maine, the mercury rose into the triple digits in late June, breaking or matching all-time daily records.

While millions of Americans were subjected to dangerously high temperatures over the course of several days last month, in some parts of the country, heat waves drove the average monthly temperature to historic highs. In over a dozen U.S. counties and county equivalents, 2025 now stands as having the hottest, or second hottest, June since record keeping began in 1895.

Using data from NOAA, Climate Crisis 247 identified the U.S. counties where average June temperatures hit historic highs in 2025. We reviewed average temperatures in June 2025 for over 3,100 counties and county equivalents, and identified those for which last month’s average temperature was either the highest or second highest local average in at least the last 131 years. All supplemental temperature data is from NOAA, and population data are five-year estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2023 American Community Survey. Counties are listed in ascending order, based on their average temperature in June 2025.
