Flood Threat For These Southern Cities This Holiday Weekend

The resulting catastrophic flash flood event killed 138 people, becoming one of the deadliest disasters in Texas history.
This holiday weekend, another flood event is shaping up in the Ark-La-Tex region where Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas adjoin. Dozens of cities in the area are forecast to receive more than two inches of rain, while the National Weather Service has issued several flood warnings. Extreme rainfall events can be especially dangerous during summer holidays, when dry soil is less absorbent and Americans are more exposed to outdoor conditions. A closer look at the data reveals the cities most likely to flood this holiday weekend.
To determine the cities most likely to flood this weekend, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on quantitative precipitation forecasts from the NOAA’s National Digital Forecast Database. Cities under current flood watches, warnings, and advisories from the National Weather Service were ranked based on total forecast cumulative rainfall for the period August 29 to 31, 2025. NWS hazard warnings are current as of August 29, 2025. Only cities with at least 10,000 were considered. Population data is from the U.S. Census Bureau.
