Globally, each of the 10 hottest years on record have all been reported within the last decade. This warming trend is likely to continue in the foreseeable future, as 2025 is currently on track to be one of the three warmest years worldwide, trailing only 2023 and 2024.

In the United States, average temperatures have also been rising in recent years, not only due to increasingly mild winters, but also because of intensifying summer heat. During this year’s meteorological summer, a period that stretches from the beginning of June to the end of August, temperatures in the continental U.S. averaged 73.3°F, making 2025 the 12th hottest summer in the last 131 years of data – and nearly 2°F warmer than the 20th century baseline summer average.

While summer temperatures in 2025 were higher than normal in most of the country, in certain U.S. cities, this year’s summer heat topped historic norms by margins well above the national average.

Using data from the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration, Climate Crisis 247 identified the U.S. cities where temperatures in summer 2025 were well above average. We reviewed data for over 200 cities and towns in the U.S. and ranked them on the average local temperature between June and August, 2025, relative to the baseline average summer temperature. Only places where average temperatures exceed the baseline by more than 2°F are listed. Baseline temperatures, as classified by NOAA, are average temperatures over the months of June, July, and August each year from 1991 through 2020. Supplemental population data are five-year estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2023 American Community Survey. Due to rounding, temperature anomalies may not represent the precise difference from noted 2025 and baseline averages.
