EV Batteries Will Power America’s Grid

There are two worries about America’s electricity grid. The first is that it is fragile and could be a target for hackers. The other is that there is not enough electricity to run though its infrastructure and power new energy hogs, air conditioning and AI server farms. Inside Climate News reports that oil batteries, abandoned or destroyed by EV owners, can power part of the Texas grid.
So far, the project is extremely modest. The batteries installed in the grid now, or those about to be installed can power about 3,300 homes, the research website reports.
Experian Automotive reports that there are about four million EVs in America–as of 2024. The growth of that figure has grown. Batteries run for five to ten years, or about 200,000 miles.
EV Battery After Five Years
The challenge of the new grid EV supply is how many of these “expiring” batteries will find their way to grid support. Today, many are used for the chemicals used to build them. Millions of EV batteries could be “retired” in the next several decades.
Some of the metals in the batteries are valuable, particularly because China has slowed or stopped the export of rare metals due to tariffs wars Some elements in current batteries are already recycled.
Dead EV batteries have a future.
