Exxon Helps People Find Gas Stations
Exxon Mobile’s corporate website primarily promotes its work in the hydrogen, low-fuel emissions, and methane sectors. However, on the same home page is a portal to where people can find gas stations. It is among the ways that Exxon Mobile promotes its most important and profitable business.
The “motorist” section of the website has a search feature and map so people can find the closest place they can fill up. It also promotes its credit card service and motor oil products. Without the map section, it would be hard, or almost impossible to find one of the company’s gas stations. Inexpensive gas may be a reason people do not buy EVs.
The functions are a reminder of what business Exxon Mobil is really in. The company no longer needs to obscure that. Exxon Mobil CEO Darren Wood recently told Fortune that it was a “dirty secret” that people would not pay the extra cost of cleaner fuels. Based on energy use patterns, he may be right. In a world in which an oil CEO could not have gotten away with that comment a few years ago, he was unapologetic.
There is a reason that there are 125,000 gas stations in the US, according to the American Petroleum Institute. There are about 64,000 EV charging stations. Based on battery charging times, gas stations almost certainly have a quicker churn rate for customers “filling up”. And gas prices are low and getting lower.
Exxon Mobil and other large oil companies make their money on oil and not alternative energy. It is worth remembering that.
