Nvidia Works To Help AI’s Greatest Trouble

Among the largest emerging green challenges is that AI data centers use vast amounts of electricity. That, in turn, has compelled some utilities to rely on fossil fuels as they await growth in solar and wind energy. AI chip giant thinks it can help solve the problem.

According to Axios, Nvidia has invested in Emerald AI. “The software shifts AI computational loads to match regional grids’ needs.”  Tested in Phoenix, it dropped energy use by 20% quarter during a period of peak demand. It has been designed to create what is known as “flexible grid conditions” when usage is high, while still supplying data centers with the electricity they need. The technology may have posted small test results, but it has not rolled out in any meaningful way.

Electricity Demand

There is a good reason for Nvidia to support it. According to Axios, “Integrating Emerald AI’s software with Nvidia chips and data center controls enables instant changes in AI workloads at and between facilities.”

Solving the energy use of AI is the Holy Grail of expanding the industry. If Emerald AI has a system that works, the company will be worth billions of dollars.

If Emerald AI or something like it does not work in the next year, the AI problem with electricity use will become a catastrophic problem.
