Bad Actors Winning Climate Wars

As the world’s temperature rises above the levels at which climate crises could be catastrophic, the nations that did not, or will not, support the actions needed to slow warming have grown. Some of the world’s largest oil companies have been encouraged to resume aggressive exploration and drilling. Tech firms that were supposed to support a green corporate future have largely abandoned this goal.
The 1.5 °C goal from the Paris Agreement has been breached in parts of last year and early this 2025. Scientists have asked if this is permanent. Today, there are no good arguments that the increase will be arrested.
One action that might have slowed oil drilling, particularly in the US, was the filing of suits against oil companies for environmental harm. Additionally, the suits claim that these companies were aware of the ecological damage and actively concealed it. Most of these suits, brought by states and cities, have failed.
Trump Oil Deals
The Trump Administration has also favored oil companies by allowing them to drill on government land, among other things. It has also thwarted offshore wind farms and will cut credits for EVs and solar roof panels.
Big tech companies promised to be net zero within a decade. Most won’t come close because of the energy footprint of AI server farms, which will consume massive amounts of electricity, some of which will come from fossil fuels.
Bad climate actors have taken over.
