Private Jet Emissions The Same As 177 Cars

A new research paper released by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) reveals a significant increase in emissions from private jets. The figure increased by 25% over the decade that ended in 2023. The number hit 19.5 million tonnes of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in a single year.
Daniel Sitompul, Aviation Fellow at the ICCT said “A typical private jet emits as many greenhouse gases each year as 177 passenger cars or nine heavy-duty highway trucks.” He added he was surprised the number was so large. Although there are hundreds of these jets, he used Kim Kardashian, Jay-Z, and Elon Musk as examples.
Sixty-five percent of all private jet flights departed from U.S. airports in 2023. These caused (55%) of GHG emissions globally. Of the 20 largest airports measured by private jet fuel use and emissions, 18 are in the US.
Rich People Count Growing
The figures are unlikely to change. They may worsen. There are 22,000 private jets in the world. Of these, about 15,000 are based in the US. Forbes reports, During the most recent seven-day period, which included the Memorial Day weekend holiday, U.S. private jet segments were up 16% year-over-year.”
Additionally, the number of extremely wealthy individuals in the world continues to rise. Henley reported that in 2024, there were 29,350 individuals worldwide with liquid investable assets of USD 100 million or higher. This figure increased by 54% over the last decade.
