The Climate Vs. AI

The story has become part of the news cycle. AI eats so much electricity that the US grid cannot handle the demand. According to the IEA, AI could use as much electricity as Japan will by 2026. There is an opposing argument. AI will be so advanced next year that it will figure out how to improve the efficiency of the entire electricity infrastructure across the US. It will solve the problem it has created.

AI will have difficulty solving the problem it created. Building a server center to handle AI “software” can take several years. Locating the energy source can take even longer. There is a small chance the coal-fired plants could be brought back online, or the capacity of a small number of oil-based plants could be increased. That would increase the pace of global warming.

Solar And Wind

Solar and wind are good potential sources of electricity. Once again, they cannot be built overnight, and low-cost funding has been hard to come by. Huge software companies could solve that funding problem over time.

Nuclear power seems to be the best option for the generation of electricity. Once again, these facilities cannot be built overnight. Some Americans continue to have nuclear anxiety because of the meltdown accident at Three Mile Island in 1979

AI can’t solve its own problem anytime soon.
