Using EVs To Power AI


It is in its early stages, but it appears that the charge of batteries in EVs can be sent back across the grid to expand the sources of electricity. That, in turn, means the strain on utilities’ electricity generation could be lessened. 

Inside Clean Energy reports, “When those EV batteries are sitting in garages and connected to chargers, they become a potentially vast resource that can be utilized by the grid, generating income for the vehicles’ owners.” The proof of the pudding is in the eating.  Large-scale trials will be needed to determine if this is possible. It is also challenging to decide on what infrastructure changes, if any, would be necessary to enable utilities to access thousands of EVs spread across numerous homes.

Legislation may be necessary for a system this complex to function effectively. Many utilities face regulations to determine what they may do to make these systems work. 

AI Server Farm Energy

The most significant advantage, if it can be implemented, is to alleviate the strain on a system powered by natural gas, coal, and some renewable sources. It is challenging to debate that, if the growth of AI server farms is at the high end of the forecast, their server farms will compete with legacy businesses and people’s homes. Any ounce of electricity input helps lower that strain. 

The EV electricity source may not be valuable as renewables grow as a source. In the meantime, such a system would be welcome.
