Since the mid- to late-20th century, a growing and overwhelming body of evidence has demonstrated that temperatures on Earth are rising at unprecedented rates and altering the global climate. According to NASA, the average surface temperature on our planet has climbed by 2°F since the late 19th century, and that the most dramatic warming period has been within the last 40 years. Additionally, the World Meteorological Organization found that each of the 10 hottest years since record keeping began 200 years ago were all reported within the last decade.

Many of the global warming trend’s immediate effects are palpable. NASA's Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment found that, between 1993 and 2019, Greenland and Antarctica lost an average of 279 billion and 148 billion tons of ice each year, respectively. Melting ice, in addition to thermal expansion of water, has also pushed sea levels up by about 8 inches in the last century – a trend that is expected to continue and accelerate in the coming decades.

Still, contrary to all the evidence and broad scientific consensus, millions of people around the world do not accept that climate change is happening. According to a sweeping international survey conducted by the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, only 83% of Americans believe that climate change is a real phenomenon, and 11% of the U.S. population deny climate change outright. In other parts of the world, however, people are far more likely to accept the reality of climate change.

Using data from the 2022 YPCCC report International Public Opinion on Climate Change, Climate Crisis 247 identified the countries where the most people believe in climate change. Of the more than 100 countries included in the survey, there are 19 in which over 90% of the population believe climate change is happening. We ranked those countries on the share of citizens surveyed who acknowledge that average global temperatures have been rising for over a century, and will continue to rise in the future, resulting in broader climatic changes. Due to rounding, the noted percentages may not add up to 100%. The YPCCC bears no responsibility for the analyses or interpretations of the data presented here.
