After Earthquake Rattles San Diego, How Does It Rank Among the Biggest U.S. Earthquakes of the Year?

On Monday, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck Southern California. More than 20,000 residents reported feeling the earthquake to the U.S.G.S, with affected areas ranging from San Diego County to Los Angeles County.

The seismic activity registers as one of the strongest earthquakes in the contiguous U.S. in recent years, and ranks among the top 200 strongest earthquakes worldwide since January. A closer look at the data reveals how Monday’s quake ranks among the largest U.S. earthquakes so far this year.
To determine the strongest earthquakes of the year, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on earthquake monitoring from the United States Geological Survey. Earthquakes that occurred within the contiguous U.S. and Hawaii from January 1, 2025 to April 15, 2025 were ranked based on magnitude. Magnitude types include body wave magnitude, local magnitude, and duration magnitude. Earthquake coordinates were matched to the nearest U.S. city with at least 100,000 residents.
