A powerful storm system is poised to bring severe weather to a wide swath of the central United States this week, putting millions of Americans at risk of damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes. According to forecasts from the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, parts of the Plains, Midwest, and Upper Mississippi Valley face heightened chances for dangerous storms through Tuesday.

There is at least a 10% chance of tornadoes in over 80 major cities, affecting over five million Americans. There is at least a 25% chance of hail in 89 cities, affecting more than six million Americans. In seven cities with populations greater than 75,000, there is a 15% chance of tornado, a 45% chance of severe thunderstorms, and a 10% chance of hail. A closer look at the data reveals the major cities in the path of severe weather this week.

To determine the cities in the path of severe weather this week, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on significant severe thunderstorm, thunderstorm winds, and tornado probability forecasts from the National Weather Service of the NOAA. Cities were ranked based on the probability of experiencing a significant severe thunderstorm, significant tornado, significant hail event, regular tornado, or regular hail event within 25 miles of their border from April 28 to April 29, 2025. Probabilities for individual severe weather phenomena were normalized and combined into one index score. Supplemental data on the total value of owner-occupied homes and population are from the U.S. Census Bureau. Only cities with at least 75,000 residents were considered.
