This weekend, a major heat wave is set to bake large portions of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, pushing daily temperature maximum to near-record highs.

Nationwide, 1,208 counties are under heat advisories from the National Weather Service, representing more than one-third of the U.S. population. According to the NWS HeatRisk forecast, while 222 counties will experience major heat risk on Friday, that number will nearly triple to 658 counties by Sunday. Some 17 counties will experience extreme heat risk – the most severe category of heat risk – on Sunday, representing 2.0 million Americans.

More than two dozen major cities ranging from Michigan to Florida are forecast to break daily temperature records. While New York temperatures could exceed records by 2°F, some cities could see records shattered by more than 5°F. A closer look at the data reveals the cities most likely to break heat records this weekend.

To determine the cities most likely to break heat records this weekend, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed 72-hour temperature forecasts and historical daily records from the NOAA. Cities were ranked based on the gap between forecast highs for July 25 to July 27, 2025, and historical maximum temperatures for those dates. Gridded forecast data are from the National Digital Forecast Database, while historical temperatures are from the Global Historical Climatology Network daily program of the National Centers for Environmental Information. Weather stations were matched to places using nearest neighbor analysis and were limited to cities within 50 miles of the city centroid. Only cities with at least 50,000 residents were considered.
