Several days after Tropical Storm Alvin, on Monday Hurricane Barbara formed off the coast of Mexico with sustained winds around 75 miles per hour, becoming the first official hurricane of the 2025 Eastern Pacific season. While Barbara is expected to weaken over the next few days, a storm named Cosme is already gathering strength and could reach hurricane status within the week. Swells from Barbara are forecast to impact coastal states like Colima and Jalisco, raising concerns about dangerous surf and rip currents.

This year’s Eastern Pacific storm list includes 24 names, from Alvin and Barbara to Zelda. Despite early storm activity in the past week, the NOAA is forecasting a below-normal hurricane season in the Pacific overall, with 12 to 18 named storms, 5 to 10 hurricanes, and up to five major hurricanes. A look at the hurricane names for the 2025 Eastern North Pacific gives a preview of the storms to come.
