Bitter Cold Front Hits These 25 Cities

On Monday, a strong cold front brought an abrupt end to what had been a warm, pleasant start to the autumn season in many parts of the country. The cold front is stretching across much of the central and eastern United States, and is forecast to bring temperatures more than 10°F lower than normal in some cities.

As of Monday, there are 525 counties under either freeze warning, freeze watch, winter storm warning, or wind advisory alert from the National Weather Service, representing 6.5% of the population. A closer look at the data reveals dozens of large cities throughout the Midwest and Northeast expected to experience precipitous drops in temperature over the next several days.

To determine the cities where temperatures will be abnormally low this week, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on temperature forecasts from the National Digital Forecast Database and historical climate normals from the National Centers for Environmental Information of the NOAA. County seats were ranked based on the difference between the forecast temperature minimum for October 15 through 17 and average minimum temperature for October from 1901 to 2000. Only counties under current Freeze Warning, Freeze Watch, Winter Storm Warning, and Wind Advisory alerts from the National Weather Service were included. Only counties with at least 100,000 residents were considered. Data is at the county level.
