Traveling the same routes every day, public transit buses are generally free from the range anxiety concerns that plague diesel die-hards, and make good candidates for electrification. In 2020, Lancaster, California became the first all-electric local bus fleet in the nation, with many cities following in their footsteps. A closer look at the data reveals which cities have the most electrified public bus fleets.
To determine the cities with the most electrified bus fleets, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on public transit fleet characteristics from the American Public Transportation Association's 2024 Public Transportation Vehicle Database. Cities were ranked based on the percentage of operational public transit buses that are fully electric. Supplemental data on average cost per EV bus is also from the APTA.
