From Hot to Cold; These U.S. Cities Have the Lowest Temperature Swings

Spring can be a hard time to dress. As the days get hotter, cooler nights persist, leading to wild variations in temperature that can leave people severely under- or over-dressed. On a recent Saturday in New York City, temperatures dropped 26 degrees in just one hour – sending picnic-goers running for shelter and setting a record for the fastest temperature swing in city history. In many arid and semi-arid areas in the West, temperatures can regularly vary up to 50 degrees on a single day.

In most of the country, however, diurnal temperature variation is far lower. In enviable parts of coastal states like Alaska, Washington, Hawaii, and Florida, the temperature varies by less than 10 degrees on an average day. A closer look at the data reveals the cities with the lowest diurnal temperature variation.

To determine the cities with the smallest daily temperature swings, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on climate normals for 2006 to 2020 from the NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information. Cities with at least 100,000 residents were ranked based on the difference between the average daily temperature minimum and the average daily temperature maximum for the years 2006 to 2020. Data for weather stations were aggregated to the city level using GIS. Only weather stations within 20 miles of a city’s boundaries were aggregated.
