In what is typically one of the busiest travel weeks of the year, several concurrent winter storms are forecast to bring icy conditions to a number of rural states over the next 72 hours.

Throughout the country, 159 counties are forecast to receive at least some ice buildup over the next three days, representing 4.6% of the U.S. population. Several counties in the Atlantic Northeast and Pacific Northwest are projected to receive up to one-fourth of an inch of ice. A closer look at NOAA data reveals the counties that could be dangerously icy this week.

To determine the counties that will have the most ice accumulation this week, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on ice accumulation forecasts from the NOAA’s National Digital Forecast Database. Counties were ranked based on the total amount of forecast ice accumulation for the period December 17 through December 19, 2024. Supplemental data on minimum forecast temperature is also from the NDFD. Data on the percentage of population in rural areas is from the U.S. Census Bureau.
